Comprising Clarence Liew (CLO), Auzaie Zie (Disco Hue, Thievves) and Marc Lian (formerly TRICK), the trio draw lessons from their individual backgrounds in funk, pop and electronica to inform their collective distillations of R&B, laced with drizzlings of guitar and funk filigree.
The group’s origins, however, had less to do with genre conventions, and more with a shared love of R&B, hip-hop and soul that became apparent after a couple of songwriting sessions. Ultimately, the band stress that genre conventions are not what make good music, rather a “deliberate attempt to capture a certain feeling and mood in the art”. This becomes apparent when Clarence describes how Cool With It came about:
“Cool With It started as a chill R&B song when we were jamming. We had completed the musical bed and all of us really liked what we had. We then started looking for lyrical ideas while taking a break outside the studio. Looking across the apartments we would watch residents through their windows, which led to the idea of a love song with creepy voyeuristic aspects. While the creepy voyeur ultimately took a backseat, there are still inklings of that idea littered in the some of the lyrics.”
